Even with increased competition for market share from direct writers, online aggregators and other disruptors, independent insurance agents continue to hold their own. Independent insurance agents remain vitally important to the industry because of the professional insurance counsel they provide and the relationships they cultivate with consumers and in the communities where they live and work.

“The phrase to describe MEMIC is: Never Stop Learning,” says Nick Burke, a 34-year-old senior underwriter and CPCU who has been with workers’ compensation insurer MEMIC for more than a decade. “It comes from the top down. I think (company CEO) John Leonard’s got 36 letters after his name,” adds Burke with a laugh. “He’s always trying to better himself and he expects all the MEMIC employees to continue to better themselves.”

It happens at events year after year, including the CPCU Society Annual Meeting and Seminars, chapter conferment exercises, and chapter meetings. At a certain point, an officer asks that all CPCUs rise, raise their right hand and affirm publicly their professional commitment: "As a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter: I shall strive at all times to live by the highest standards of professional conduct; ... " As all CPCUs know, this is the beginning of our oath, known to us as The CPCU Professional Commitment.
